Why Should I Bring My Baby to the Dentist’s Office?

Even though your infant likely doesn’t have any teeth, bringing them to see Dr. Peng early on is an excellent way to help them get used to visiting the dentist. These appointments are more for educational purposes, as Dr. Peng can help provide you with tips and tricks on how to clean their gums and erupting teeth. She can also help you know what to expect down the road as their smile begins developing.

When Should My Baby First Go to the Dentist’s Office?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as our team at Little Penguin Pediatric Dentistry, recommends bringing your baby in to see a dentist by their first birthday or whenever their first tooth erupts - whichever comes first.

What Happens During Baby’s First Dental Checkup?

Your child’s first dental checkup won’t last long, as there won’t be a professional cleaning or X-rays taken like there will be when they get older. As your child sits comfortably on your lap, Dr. Peng will educate you on what a good dental hygiene routine looks like for a baby with emerging teeth and ask you questions about their oral habits.

She’ll conduct a brief examination of their mouth and advise you on when you can begin brushing their teeth, what type of toothpaste to use and how much, and other important information. She’ll also provide you with some growth milestones, like when they start eating solid foods and how this can impact their oral health, as well as answer any questions you may have.
